and careless eye the blood that dims its shine; repair the boat, replace the
helm or oar, while others straggling muse along the shore; for the wild
bird the busy springes set, or spread beneath the sun the dripping net.

of enterprise. Tell o’er the tales of many a night of toil, and marvel
where they next shall seize a spoil»1.
Pallidi epigoni rispetto agli eroi romantici di Lord Byron, «i
nostri pirati contemporanei […] non sembrano verosimilmente de-
stinati a essere immortalati nella coscienza collettiva e ad alimenta-
re il nostro immaginario romantico. Se, infatti, quanto a crudeltà e
coraggio non hanno nulla da invidiare a quelli di una volta, i pirati
di oggi sembrano avere un unico scopo nella vita: arricchirsi»2. Ep-
pure predare per arricchirsi è prerogativa tanto essenziale quanto
implicita al concetto e alla nascita stessa del fenomeno della pirate-
ria. Lo mette in evidenza l’uso linguistico greco (ma anche latino,
in cui praedo identifica sia i briganti ‘di terra’ che quelli ‘per ma-
re’)3, per il quale uno stesso termine, ad ampio spettro semasiologi-
co, individua pirati e briganti: lh/sthv" è chi ruba, depreda, il re-
